As we have understood from the previous article, to have a successful business or brand, content creation is the principal for your business or brand growth.

According to research, experts believe that content is the lifeline of every business or brand and that content creation is a tool for a successful marketing strategy that has worked and is working.

Content Creation

In creating quality content, a content creator is responsible for creating the appropriate content for a platform owned by a brand or business.

Content Creation As A Skill

Content creation as a skill is a combination of research, customer or client management, branding expertise, content design, SEO, promotion, and analysis. Having all these skills is an end goal: to connect with the audience.

Content creation requires a working process. For an easy content creation process, there is a need to have a formula.

A formula has many definitions, part of which are:

  1. Rule method
  2. Form
  3. Regulation
  4. Draft

There are a lot of rules for the best content creation. Choosing the perfect formula for your business or brand may require experimentation and research. It is also important to note that content creation is a skill, not a task.

The formula for the content creation process is a simple one. I call this formula the WWWWWWH formula. The formula comprises Five(5) Who’s and One(1) How. We can refer to the formula as research, brainstorming, planning, publishing, and promotion (RBPPP).

Content Formulas

For better understanding, we will stick to our 5W’s and 1H.

To make use of the formula, all you have to do is to answer the following questions:

Who is your audience?

When creating your content, you do so for your audience, not the business. The audience is your priority. To write for your audience, you understand individual personalities, interests, problems, inspirations, and goals. To understand your audience, you can create a buyer persona.

A buyer persona is a template or written representation of your ideal customer. In creating a buyer persona, you must conduct extensive research on the existing customer base of your products or services. The extensive research should also include new customers to give you a clearer picture of your audience size. This research should reveal who your customers are, what they do, their motivations, and their goals. This information will give you a clear view of the type of content to create to attract your audience.

Buyer Persona.

Why are you creating the content?

Churning out content to attract your audience is not enough reason to put out a piece of content. Before creating your content, as a business or brand owner, you have to highlight the purpose of the content. For conciseness, your content must have a goal. The goal for creating the content can fall into any of the following categories:

  1. Brand Visibility
  2. Push Sales
  3. Generate traffic
  4. Generate leads

When creating your content, you can focus on one or more of the above categories as a guide. Remember to balance the content with the needs of the audience. It is vital that your audience feel the content is for them.

What type of content are you creating for your audience?

For this aspect, you decide the type of content your audience will understand. The kind of content you can create can fall under the following categories:

  1. Blog posts
  2. Ebooks
  3. Infographics
  4. Checklists
  5. Animation
  6. Videos
  7. Reviews

You can also utilize social media platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn( a good idea for a B2B), Tiktok, Facebook, Twitter, and others.

Keyword Research

Before deciding on the type of content, ensure you carry out extensive keyword research (or SEO research for a blog post) to understand what your potential audience needs. There are several tools online (free and paid) that you can use to research what your audience has been searching for. All you need to input in a keyword research tool is a seed keyword. For example, as a shoe manufacturing firm, your seed keyword should be a shoe. Inputting this seed keyword in a keyword generating or research tool can give you a wide range of long-tail keywords of what your potential audience has been looking for already. A few examples of keywords research tools are:

  1. Keyword.io
  2. Keywordtool.io
  3. Semrush
  4. Ahrefs
  5. Moz

I have used some of the keyword tools above, and they were of great help to my content creation journey.

What will be your subject matter?

Brainstorming Session

Ideation is the process of creating topic clusters for your content. You can also refer to this process as brainstorming. At this stage, you can make a list of possible topics under three categories:

  1. Yes topics
  2. No topics
  3. Maybe topics

My formula is to spend 30 minutes brainstorming every idea based on the above stages (audience needs and type of content). I will spend the first 10 minutes writing every topic that comes to mind. The preceding 10 minutes should be to categorize my topics into categories. The last 10 minutes should be to determine the final topic cluster I would use as my content.

This method of brainstorming may not be your cup of tea. Figure out what works for you in your brainstorming process. However, ensure you include this stage in your content creation process.

Where and when will you publish your content?

Where and when you publish your content can be determined on the platform of your choice. Choosing the platform should be where your audience hangs out the most. For your business or brand, social media platforms may be the key to attracting your audience. For a B2B business or brand, blog posts may be the crucial platform of reach.

Whichever platform you choose to use, ensure that your content is consistent and matches the tone and goals of your business or brand.

How will your content get to your audience?

Now that you have gone through the recommended process of creating and publishing your content, what next? Effective content creation is not complete with no promotion.

To promote your content, you can consider the use of the following:

  1. Social Media: You can either run ads on social media for better reach and awareness or focus on organic tactics. Ensure you understand the algorithm of each platform and
  2. Third-party outreach: You can make use of influencers for faster reach. You can also use the method of guest posting. Guest posting is a content marketing strategy that involves publishing and promoting your content via a third-party blog, website, or social media account.
  3. Email marketing: What better way to reach your audience than directly? From your emails, you can direct them to the platform where your content is published.

Do you still think you do not need a content creation formula? I guess you do not think so anymore. Utilizing the steps above can help execute all your business or brand goals.

I will see you in the next class!!!
